Anticipation is a piece about waiting for something that never seems to come. The idea behind Anticipation is that it is in “F major,” and never lands on the tonic F major chord. For much of its duration, it does not even feel as if it is in F major, yet, the entire piece is notated in F major. The tonic F major chord never comes. Anticipation takes the listener through an array of different sections that never seem to ever lead to any sort of true conclusion. At least they never conclude in any truly satisfactory manner. The point of arrival never comes. There is nothing. Even after everything, there is nothing.
